Airbnb: Since Airbnb was founded, we’ve tried on a number of typefaces. Everything we’ve used worked in the moment, but never felt distinctly us. As we neared our 10 year anniversary, we felt ready to craft something that met our increasing need for character, function, and scale. We set out to create something that could differentiate our brand, meet our readability standards, and be utilized both on and off-screen. This typographic new beginning spans both brand marketing and design language systems, and has a quirky name to boot. As a geometric sans serif, the typeface was designed with an overall roundness that feels friendly and approachable. From a precise reading experience at lighter weights to an eye-catching spirit at heavier weights, one thing’s for sure—Airbnb Cereal doesn’t take itself too seriously. Airbnb Cereal functions as much as it charms. Readability can be compromised when letters are easily mistaken for one another—even more so at small sizes. From its apertures to its x-height, the typeface was designed for a fully functional, enjoyable reading experience. Increasing the proportional height of lowercase characters (x-height) make the text easier to read, especially in small sizes. Readability is a priority so we designed letters, such as the lowercase ‘e’ and ‘c’, to have open apertures. This makes them easy to distinguish at small sizes. The Airbnb experience spans both on and offline worlds, so it only made sense to create a typeface that could flex with us.
